This is on the subject of the question of "Who Wrote the ?".

Verses: 2 Timothy 3:14-16; 2 Peter 1:21

The Bible is often a misunderstood book – both what it says as well as its origin and history. Who wrote it, where did it come from, and how did we get it? The book is inspired by God - literally "God-breathed". The things we read were spoken by prophets who were given the words to say.

  • 66 books
  • 40 authors
  • Its integrated, consistent message originated from outside our space-time
  • Has design features that are impossible to replicate
  • No other book pre-writes history (accurately)

I. Its Author
A. Audibly spoken words by God
B. Inspired words by the Holy Spirit
C. Words and actions of Jesus the Messiah

II. Its Publishers
A. Prophets who spoke the words
B. Holy men who wrote the words
C. Churches who transmitted the words

Canon of Old Testament
- Finalized by 400 BC
- Referred to by Jesus

Canon of New Testament
- Finalized ~1st century
- While apostles were still alive, could be checked out/validated
- Events in the books could be verified by eyewitnesses

Process
- Letters received and circulated
- Growing group of letters exchanged and revered by churches
- Not selected by a council (ratified what churches had long previously accepted and made known)
- Churches gave them approval my recognizing they were…
o Authoritative (apostolic)
o In harmony with accepted doctrine (OT prophets and NT apostles)
- All 27 NT books accepted by end of 1st century
o Every NT book cited as authoritative by a church father within one generation
- Well-documented in church history
